Acura has unveiled the brand new NSX Type S, the ultimate variant of their Acura NSX super car. It is, somewhat sadly, also the last hurray for the second generation NSX as production will end later this year. Only 350 examples of the Acura NSX Type S will be produced, 300 will go to the US and 50 to the rest of the world. The Acura NSX is made in Honda’s factory in Marysville, Ohio. The Type S is both lighter and more powerful than the base model, and fitted with various performance upgrades. Honda says the NSX Type S is two seconds faster around the Suzuka Circuit in Japan compared to the 2021 NSX.

The Acura NSX Type S uses the same basic powertrain as the NSX: a longitudinally mid-mounted 3.5 liter twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine coupled to three electric motors; two at the front and one at the rear. The petrol engine and the rear electric motor power the rear wheels only, and the two front-mounted electric motors power the front wheels. Total output in the Acura NSX Type S is 600 hp and 492 lb-ft of torque, up 27 hp and 16 lb-ft compared to the base model. Output and size of the 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery has been enhanced too. The 9-speed DCT gearbox has been upgraded with new mapping software for faster shifting. Weight has been reduced by 58 pounds to 3744 lbs. Honda claims a top speed of 191 mph and a 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Visually, the NSX Type S comes with a redesigned front with improved aerodynamics, a new carbon fiber rear diffuser, new alloy wheels, new Pirelli P-Zero tires especially developed for the NSX Type S, a new carbon fiber roof, and cool Type S badges on the rear fenders.

The Acura NSX Type S is fitted with new Brembo ventilated carbon ceramic brake discs. At the front, the brake discs have a diameter of 15 inch and a width of 1.3 inches. At the rear, the brake discs have a diameter of 14.2 inch and a width of, again, 1.3 inches. The front and rear brake discs are mated to aluminum monoblock brake calipers, with 6 pistons at the front and 4 pistons at the rear. This advanced performance brake system is exclusive for the NSX Type S.

The brake calipers are painted in red and branded ‘NSX’.

Whether Honda is going to make a third-generation NSX is yet unclear. They may take their time to decide, after all, there was a time gap of 11 years between the end of the first generation and the arrival of the second. So that’ll take us to 2031…
